HIRTA Funding & Expenses

Funding

It is often misconstrued that funding for public transit comes solely from the government. However, it is a mix of federal and state dollars, contracts, local tax, our farebox, donations, and grants.

Federal (19.14%)

State (14.68%)

Local (13.68%)

Fares (10.2%)

Donations (0.01%)

Contract (34.65%)

Grant (7.28%)

Misc. (0.36%)

Expenses

HIRTA's largest expense are the employees. Other expenses include maintenance, building leases and utilities, insurance, and professional services such as legal and IT.

How you can help

All central Iowans benefit from public transit, whether they ride HIRTA or not. If everyone helps out, we’re making sure that EVERYONE has the ability to get where they need to go, to see an increase in quality of life, and to support local businesses which helps the economy. It’s up to each and every one of us to come together and help our communities!

Check out our Advocacy Toolkit here. This advocacy toolkit gives you a clear understanding of those challenges and simple ways you can help. Inside, you will find key information, action steps, and ready to use resources to make your voice heard at the local, state, and federal level.

The easiest way to help is to simply ride HIRTA. You benefit and we benefit - it's a win-win!

You can also help by making a tax-free donation to our non-profit organization, Heart of Transit. Your donation will allow us to provide rides to those in need. You can find out more by clicking here.
